To give recognition to an individual member of the Insurance Women of North San Diego County who has shown outstanding personal achievement, leadership abilities, promotes growth in the association, and encourages new members to be active, etc.

Education Awards


Distinguished Graduate Award

The NAIW sponsors this award, which is presented to the graduate who receives the highest average grade on the examinations for the Certificate in General Insurance. The Institute of America (IIA) chooses the winners and NAIW membership is not required. A prize of $500.00 accompanies the award, which is presented at the joint CPCU/IIA meeting.


Canadian Award

This award was initiated in 1985 and is offered in conjunction with the Insurance Institute of Canada to one of the top three students in the Institute's Associate Program. The prize is $150.00.


Royal Insurance AIT Achievement Award

This award is presented to the NAIW member with the highest completion score for the Associate in Information Technology (AIT) program. The award is $500.00 and a plaque.

Associate in Information Technology Awards

NAIW sponsors four awards in conjunction with the Associate in Information Technology (AIT) designation:


Arlene G. DeSemone Memorial Life/Health Essay Award

Sponsored by the Rhode Island State Council this national award was established to recognize a life/health professional who has demonstrated superior knowledge of the life/health field, demonstrated leadership in the field, and is an active member in NAIW activities. National headquarters will determine and announce the essay topic by October 1st. The $500.00 and engraved award will be presented at the NAIW national convention.

General Awards


Rookie of the Year

This award was initiated during the 1977-1978 fiscal year. Professional Book Distributors (PPBD,Inc.) sponsored the award for twenty years. GMAC Insurance (Integon Corporation/National General) assumed sponsorship during the 1998-1999 fiscal year. The purpose of the award is to recognize the accomplishments of a new member who has made significant contributions to NAIW within the first two years of joining the association. It recognizes:

Each local association within a region may submit a candidate for the regional award. The regional winner receives a plaque, presented by an Integon representative. The national Rookie of the Year is selected from the regional winners, and receives a $500.00 check and a plaque during the Recognition Luncheon at the NAIW National Convention.

Claims Professional of the Year

This award was initiated during the 1973-1974 fiscal year by Continental Insurance. Crawford & Company assumed sponsorship in 1995. The purpose of the award is to recognize a claims professional who has demonstrated superior knowledge of the claims field, experienced professional advancement through educational pursuits, demonstrated leadership in the field, and is an active participant in NAIW activities. Judging is based on the members's:

Each local association within a region can submit a candidate for the regional award. The regional winner receives an engraved desk set, presented by a Crawford & Company representative. The national Claims Professional of the Year is selected from the regional winners, and receives a $500.00 check and a mantel clock during the Recognition Luncheon at the NAIW National Convention.

Insurance Professional of the Year

This award was first presented in 1991. The purpose of the award is to recognize an individual who in pursuing a career has contributed to the insurance industry through education, creation of industry alliances, and/or legislative activity. Criteria for the award are:

Each local association within a region can submit a candidate for the regional award. The regional winner receives a plaque. The national Insurance Professional of the Year is selected from the regional winners, and receives a $1,000.00 check and a plaque during the Recognition Luncheon at the NAIW National Convention.

Communicate with Confidence Speak-Off Awards

Communicate with Confidence (CWC) is an NAIW educational program designed to teach the skills necessary to prepare and deliver oral presentations. The course is conducted at the local association level and graduates can participate in a local speak-off.

At each level of competition, the candidates are required to deliver a three-minute prepared speech and a one-minute impromptu speech.

Local winners proceed to the state competition, where a winner and runner-up are selected. The winner and the runner-up at the state level receive a certificate. State winners proceed to the regional competition, where a winner and runner-up are selected. The regional winner receives an engraved plaque and the runner-up receives a certificate. Regional winners then progress to the national competition, where the winner receives an engraved plaque and a $500.00 check during the Recognition Luncheon at the NAIW National Convention.

Note: The runner-up proceeds to the next level of competition if the winner cannot attend.

AAMGA Achievement Award

The American Association of Managing General Agents (AAMGA) created this award to allow NAIW to recognize members at the state, regional, and national levels. The purpose of the award is to honor a member, committee, or local association that has contributed significantly to NAIW at the various levels of the organization.

Each year NAIW headquarters provides AAMGA with a list of the names, addresses, and phone numbers of the current state directors, the regional vice presidents, and the national president. A representative from AAMGA contacts these officers directly regarding the presentation of the award at state, regional, and national meetings.

There are no application forms, and the winner at one level does not progress to the next level. The presiding officer at each level selects the winners at that level based on input from others and personal judgement. Consideration is given to individual members or groups of members who have made outstanding contributions to NAIW during the past year. The presiding officer is responsible for:

Pinnacle Award

This award is presented annually to recognize local association achievement in management, membership development, membership programs, service to NAIW, and service to the industry. The criteria for the award includes:

The award is $500.00 and a podium banner, presented during the Recognition Luncheon at the NAIW National Convention.

Sponsoring Association Awards

Local associations or state councils that meet a certain level of contribution can be recognized as an official NAIW sponsor.

Sponsors are recognized at the national convention, and receive a personalized banner and ribbon to display at local and state meetings, regional conferences, and NAIW national convention.

Gayle Reskin Angel Award

This award established in the memory of Gayle Reskin, CPIW, recognizes those individuals who typify the ideals of NAIW - Loyalty, Education, and Fellowship. They have supported the efforts of the association and individual members, actively encouraged professional development through education, and have served as mentors to other members.


All California members in good standing of NAIW are eligible. Nominations are accepted from any California member or association.
